Rhodium [Rhodi]:

-Jan Scholten

Always second

Both Boericke and Clarke have written something about Rhodium.

Boericke describes a proving of the metal done by Macfarlane and Clarke describes a proving of Rhodiumoxydenitrate done by Hering.

Signature

The name is derived from rodos, or rose, because of the pink colour of its salt solutions. It was discovered in 1803.

Rhodium is very corrosion resistant and is often used in protective coatings on other metals. It is also used in electrical points, aeroplane engine points and fountain pens.

Glass covered with a thin layer of Rhodium makes an excellent mirror, hence its use in car reflector headlights. Platina and Rhodium are components in exhaust fume converters.

Essence: the final step before showing your work of art.

The final step

They feel they are almost there, they have nearly reached the top. There is just one more thing to be done and then it is all ready. They are about to reap the harvest of their long preparations. They are longing for success, longing for recognition of their hard labours, longing for appreciation of their creative work.

Trial run

They like to test everything once more before the official opening, like a dress rehearsal before the the first night.

Final corrections

They like to make the last few necessary alterations so that the end product can be perfect. During the dress rehearsal there are a few details to be improved. If it turns out that there are large pieces that need to be changed they get into a panic. In extreme cases they may call off the whole show out of fear that it will be a complete flop.

Blunder during the performance

Everything is going all right so far. There is every possibility that the performance will be a success. But the fear remains that is will be a failure. They are extremely nervous before the opening, afraid of committing a blunder that will ruin all those years of hard work. Or that someone will put a blemish on their name and all their achievements, even if it is unfounded. It is like a harvest that may be spoilt by a plague of locusts or a heavy thunderstorm at the very last minute. They tend to feel hurt or humiliated at the last minute, as if a doubt is being cast on their abilities and their creations.

The top sportsman who is preparing himself to win the title This is the stage of getting ready to take over the first place.

Everything points to success. But they may get stuck at this stage and remain second best for the rest of their days. They get so tense before the finals that they start to make mistakes and don't win the coveted first prize after all. Like Ivan Lendl who narrowly missed winning Wimbledon every single time.

DD: Silver series, Stage 9.

DD Ruthenium: feels more pressure, hasn't got time to be nervous, is more irritable. Rhodium is more nervous, always on the lookout for details that can be improved upon.

Case

A 56 year old man has high blood pressure, the lowest reading being between 90 and 110. Sometimes his heart misses a beat.

There have been times when it suddenly felt as if his heart was sinking, the way you sometimes get in an aeroplane. It can happen when he breathes deeply, movement ameliorates.

It gives him a headache with pain behind both eyes, sometimes slightly worse on the left side. It makes him want to rub his eyes. The pain is (<) on waking and (>) on rising.

Sometimes he gets heartburn at night around 4 or 5 am. Drinking a sip of water ameliorates.

He is a professor and the responsibility towards his assistants makes matters worse. Recent financial restrictions are the cause of discontent and when one of his assistants was going to be made redundant he blamed the professor personally.

His position involves frequent travels abroad to attend various conferences. He sometimes gets ill just before he has to travel: coughing, wheezing, mucus he cannot dislodge, sore muscles around his diaphragm during coughing, sore throat and headache. Then he gets more and more worried because the journey has to go ahead and he has to give his lectures. He gets quite worked up before these lectures, more than he cares to admit. The worst thing he can imagine is that someone will ask a question he can't answer.

Everything would be going fine and then suddenly he would let himself down.

His is quite closed, keeps everything inside, but he appears kind and friendly.

He has been nominated to become the next general secretary of the international federation of scientists. It would be a wonderful opportunity to round of his career like this. But although he is the only person on the list of nominations he still worries whether it will fall through at the last minute.

Twenty five years ago he suffered a nervous breakdown during his Ph.D research. The atmosphere created by his promoter was very tense and this made matters worse. Eventually he did his thesis under the guidance of someone else.

His neck tends to get stiff and it creaks a lot. The third cervical vertebra is painful when pressed. His throat feels swollen and he frequently has to scrape it. He has had a lazy left eye since childhood.

Generals

Weather: (>) fresh- and mountain air, (<) sea.

perspiration: little.

Time: (<) morning, (<) 11 pm.

Desires: meat (2), cheese (2), spices.

Aversion: red vegetables such as beetroot, carrots, red cabbage.

Food: (<) cheese fondue: this sets in his stomach.

Sleep: on the right side or back.

Analysis

His sense of responsibility as a professor towards his assistants reminds us of Aurum, but this remedy only worked temporarily. On closer investigation we can see that he isn't so much a manager, but much more a scientist. This takes us to the Silver series instead of the Gold series.

He is on the list of nominations to become general secretary of the international federation of scientist. This points to Stage 9, which takes us to Rhodium. The fact that he worries whether the whole thing will fall through at the last minute further confirms this stage. Another confirmation is the fact that he gets ill just before he has to go on a journey to lecture abroad.

And the worst thing he can imagine is that someone will ask a question he can't answer, that everything will be going all right and then suddenly he will commit a blunder.

Reaction

After Aurum there was a temporary improvement, but after it had been repeated it had very little effect. But after Rhodium 1M he immediately felt a lot better, and he started to get to grips with a whole lot of issues. He realised that his own attitude was the most important, everything else would sort itself out accordingly. His headache had gone down a lot and his energy is much better after the first month.

After 6 months his blood pressure is better and the headache has almost gone. He is more relaxed about the financial cuts at work.

He is making sure that his own work and that of his assistants can continue and the more general business will have to take care of itself. And when there are not enough secretaries or colleagues to take care of the general running of things that is just bad luck, but it doesn't worry him.
