Tellurium [Tell]:

- Jan Scholten

Tellurium has long been known as a homoeopathic remedy. But it has mainly been prescribed on physical symptoms such as sciatica or ear infections, because the mental / emotional picture was not clear. Julian (1979 page 499 and 1984, page 305) has described a proving done by Reaside. Peters (personal comment) has recognised the theme of gone down in one of his cases.

Signature

The name is derived from the Latin word tellus, meaning earth. It was discovered in 1782. It is heavier than Iodum although it has a lower atomic number. It has some metallic and some non-metallic properties. It is quite similar to Selenium.

It is used together with Selenium and Bismuth to make tiny refrigeration units based on thermo electric effects. Other uses are: radio detectors, silver alloys to retain shine, disinfectants. colouring of silver bromide in photography and semi conductors. It increases the electrical and heat conductivity when it is combined with other metals. It is also used as a catalyst in the vulcanisation of rubber.

Essence: neglecting your creativity.

The loss of creativity

They feel that their creations are no longer accepted by the general public. They have come to the end of their career and it is only the goodwill of the people that keeps them going. They are not taken seriously anymore. They don't take themselves seriously either, but they still get very angry when they are not being accepted or understood. This feeling often comes about after several big projects have failed. It can also be the situation of someone who has had it too easy, who has never had to exert himself to create something and who therefore doesn't take his own talents very seriously.

Neglected as an artist

They often give their power away so they no longer have a grip on what is happening. Or they handed over their financial affairs to an agent so they no longer have a say in the matter. This is also a a way of handing over responsibility.

Experimental art: extravagant

They become interested in experimental art. They have grown tired of the well trodden paths and are searching for freedom by indulging in all sorts of experiments. They are really different from the rest. Their creations are extraordinary. They are the musicians who like to improvise. It also saves them the trouble of having to study and rehearse their pieces, so it makes life a lot easier. They tend to be be quite provocative, they like to see the reaction when they produce something strange. They like to lure their audience with clever tricks.

Neglecting their unique creativity

Their creativity is going downhill and they tend to neglect it. In the beginning they will continue to make new designs, but they don't bother with the final product anymore. Their presentation become more and more shabby and disorganised and they don't take themselves seriously anymore. Later on their designs become fewer and fewer because they think that it is wasted on the general public anyway.

Fantasies and memories of the good old days of fame

Eventually all that is left is the memory of the old days when they were still famous. They tend to fantasise about all sorts of abstracts ideas, about art and about the things they would have created. It is a dream world in which they create the most wonderful things. And when others remind them that these days are over they feel very upset.

Expecting admiration

They expect to be admired, even if they do very little to deserve it. If their experimental and extravagant designs aren't immediately recognised as something very special they become indifferent towards their audience. They'll become slack and careless because they expect to be dismissed anyway. This careless presentation causes the public to lose interest very quickly and so they get into a vicious circle. They make very little effort to convince people that what they are presenting is really something worthwhile. They expect others to recognise the uniqueness of their creations without any further explanation.

And so they become indifferent to fame and admiration. They may even provoke the public and create an adverse reaction.

Eventually they start to neglect themselves and turn into a shabby artist. Hence their own dislike for shabby types, drug users and other down and outs.

Living on past reputations

Although they know that they have lost the fame they once had, they simply can't believe it. I used to make the most wonderful things, I used to be really famous, where has it all gone? They prefer to live in the past, the world of memories is infinitely better than the present reality.

The veteran sportsman

This is the top sportsman after his career has come to an end. He still plays in the odd veteran competition or charity tournament, but all that is left of the great days is memories and photograph albums.

DD Antimonium: is angry about losing fame, he wants to be heard but everybody pushes him aside. Tellurium has accepted the fact that nobody wants to know about him anymore. He doesn't even want to stoop so low as to speak to the general public, because they wouldn't understand anyway.

Case

A 40 year old man has problems with his arm. It started after he strained himself playing an old musical instrument called a dulcimer, which he had to hold like a guitar. Afterwards he couldn't stretch his arm anymore, the muscles in the hollow of his elbow were too tense, with the pain radiating to his hand. He couldn't bring his hand up to his shoulder anymore either. Physiotherapy didn't help.

He also had problems while playing tennis because he is left handed. But he won a veteran tennis tournament the other day. In the past the public didn't support him, but he didn't exactly make himself popular either. He used to challenge them if they only applauded when the home players was scoring a point. If they didn't clap when he hit a winning point he would shout: how about a bit of applause for this shot? He used to get very angry during these games, throwing his racket around from time to time, which caused the crowd to jeer at him. Later on he still used to make provocative remarks, but he tried to keep it funny, so that he eventually got the people on his side.

He has been a bit depressed lately. He is an architect but he feels his work is not really appreciated and business isn't going very well. He always seems to attract people who want something very ordinary, nothing on which he can let his imagination run riot. It has to be cheap and normal and he has to accept these commissions because he has to earn a living, but he doesn't like it. He would love to design something really extravagant, also because his studies incorporated the most advanced ideas of the present times.

He doesn't really earn enough to make a living, so they depend on his wife's income, she is an art teacher. Because of this precarious financial situation he hasn't got the money to start any new projects, to buy a place to start his own advisory office.

He has got all sorts of fantastic plans for the future, but the area in which he lives is very conservative and they are not interested in his outlandish ideas. A while ago he had designed a huge project all by himself but handed it over to a development firm which didn't do anything with it. So it has come to nothing and he has lost all control over the situation. This was a terrible disappointment. Since then he is afraid of losing out all the time because he has got no financial backing anymore. He is afraid of raising his hopes too much in case things go wrong again. He ridicules his own plans and tries to avoid responsibility of having a go. His environment thinks he is a bit strange anyway, but he pretends it doesn't matter to him.

His presentations were shabby and disorderly, especially before he had a computer. They still lack commitment, as if he doesn't take himself seriously. After a visit to a client, where he laughs about his own plans, he returns home feeling angry that nobody understands him. He spends most of his time living in a world of fantasy.

His father used to have a big architects agency. He should have really taken this over, because then he would have had the backing of a large firm. But he didn't get on with his father who didn't take him seriously.

He loves playing the piano, but only freestyle. He recently gave a concert together with a friend in which they played a piece they had written themselves, with a lot of improvisation in between. The audience didn't like it on the whole, although a few of them thought it was great. They gave several performances, some of them turned out all right, others didn't. When it goes well it is a if a whole new world opens, in which they can improvise to their hears content.

What he loves most of all is singing. When he sings he feels he can really get through to the core of things. He would love to express himself in this way all the time, but it never really happens, because nobody seems to be interested. He would feel embarrassed if he tried, because it doesn't fit in the daily life of ordinary business. He once sang in the streets when he was abroad and nobody knew him. That gave him a buzz.

He often dreams about a friend who died. In the dream they go out and have a good time together and he says to his friend: So you are not dead after all?. This was an old friend from university who was very intelligent, a genius really who could turn his hand to anything. But nothing succeeded in the end and he eventually committed suicide.

Generals

Weather: warm, (<) too much heat. Perspiration: profuse (<)(<) exertion. Time: (<) morning. Desires: ice-cream, raw vegetables, steak, fruit. Aversion: purslane(2), melon. Sleep: good. Analysis He is an architect who likes to draw up plans, which indicates a remedy from the Silver series. But his plans are not appreciated and they come to nothing, so he resorts to fantasies, which is Stage 16. This brings us to Tellurium, further confirmed by the other symptoms. He makes up many plans (Silver series) in his mind (Stage 16). He used to provoke (Stage 16) the audience (Silver series). He used to get very angry which amused (Stage 16) the audience (Silver series). He makes extravagant (Stage 16) designs (Silver series). He has many ideas and plans (Silver series), but they all came to nothing (Stage 16). His shabby and disordered (Stage 16) in his presentations (Silver series). He doesn't take his designs seriously (Stage 16) when he presents (Silver series) them. He loves playing the piano (Silver series), improvising (Stage 16) all the way. He is the odd one out (Stage 16) in the area (Silver series), but it doesn't matter to him (Stage 16). Other Tellurium symptoms: warm, profuse perspiration, (>) ice- cream, fruit, (<) melon.

Reaction

Just the sound of the word Tellurium alone makes a deep impression on him. It sounds good to him, especially because it is an unusual remedy, which acknowledges that he is a special person.

One month after Tellurium 1M the pain in his arm is almost gone.

He is much more self assured in his presentations. He takes himself more seriously and dresses in ordinary clothes when he visits his clients. He knows he is good at his job and this is what he radiates out. He doesn't ridicule his own designs anymore and is prepared to work for it. He feels more active, more optimistic and more positive.
