7 The Uranium series: Francium to Plutonium and beyond
All the elements in the Uranium series are radioactive, which means that they all emit certain kinds of rays. These can be alpha rays, helium nuclei, beta rays, electron or gamma rays, which is an electromagnetic type of rays. Radon or Radium has been named after the word radiation. This radiation causes the the elements to disintegrate and turn into a new element. So the elements only have a limited lifespan, which is expressed in terms of half lives, i.e. the amount of time it takes for the original quantity to be reduced by half.
