Magnesium fluoratum [Mag-f]:

- Jan Scholten

All we know about Magnesium fluoratum is from a proving done by Julian (1984, page 330). But we still don't have a clear picture of this remedy.

Group analysis

The theme, according to the group analysis,is the idea that aggression can lead to loss of their glittering social position. They are afraid to express their anger, because it might cost them their job. But they are equally afraid of aggression from others, from their clients or their colleagues. They don't know how to react and are afraid that the conflict will get out of hand, and that they are the ones who will become the victim of that and lose their job. A variation on the theme is 'forcefully' trying to build up a social status. They want to have a fast and smooth image. The forcefulness with which they try to achieve this makes their behaviour very artificial, not at all the smooth and easy going image they would like to have. The more artificial and cramped this gets, the more chance there is that it will bring them into conflict with their boss, putting their glittering career at risk.

Another variation may be that they are afraid that they don't love their wife. They feel that they have to break off the relationship, but they are afraid of creating a row. One one hand they are afraid of such a quarrel, because their relationship isn't really bad at all, and on the other hand these strange fears keep coming back from time to time, without them knowing why. Then they talk about this fear with their wife, who subsequently becomes very unsure about the relationship herself.

The root of the fear is that they want a very close relationship, but they can't because they are so afraid that they might have to face conflicts during an intense relationship. And this is what they don't dare to do.

Case

In the description of this case I will add in brackets either (Mag) or (Fluor) where applicable.

A man of 24 came to me with urethritis (Fluor). The main complaint was a severe pain in the lower abdomen and the anal region. All his muscles in his buttocks and around the anus would go into a cramp (Mag), as if everything was locked solidly.

The pain came in attacks of 5 or 10 minutes. The pain started mainly at the end of urination, and was so severe that he almost didn't dare to urinate anymore. After coitus he also got these pains (Fluor). The pain was ameliorated by bending double (Mag), kneeling, and walking around in circles (Fluor). He used to be hot during these attacks, with tingling feet and milky white urine.

A second complaint was pain in his stomach, a feeling as if his stomach was tied in a knot. This pain was accompanied by tension in the whole body (Mag), tension in the jaws, sweating, nausea with retching or vomiting. The pain was (<) cold, (>) clearing the throat, (>) vomiting, (>) lemon brandy (Mag for the lemon, Fluor for the brandy). These pains were worse thinking about them, and any anticipation made it worse, too (Mag). When he has to go to the dentist, or has a date to go out for dinner, or to visit someone, the pain starts, which often prevents him from going out. It has even got so bad that he has started to avoid those places and situations where he has once had these pains. He always has the feeling that they might start again at any moment. It is particularly bad in narrow spaces. This complaint first started during an exam.

During the period that these complaints started, when he was about 18, he was trying to cope with two problems. The first was his future father-in-law. This man used to drink a lot and when he was drunk he used to be aggressive to his wife. This caused him a great deal of anxiety, because he wanted to get angry (Mag) with his father-in-law, but didn't dare in case he would lose his future wife (Fluor).

The second problem was his job. He worked at a bank and had managed to climb up to quite a high position in a short time (Fluor). But here too he had to constrain himself towards aggressive (Mag) clients, because you just can't let yourself go in such a situation. But on the other hand he felt deep inside that he would never bend his head. He was even a bit afraid of his own aggression (Mag), for if it got out of hand it might have cost him his job (Fluor).

He told me that he liked to have success (Fluor). When he was 14 he had seen a film about some people who had to count every penny, and he decided then that that would never happen to him if he could avoid it. He fantasises a lot, spends hours thinking about an (imaginary) conflict (Mag) and what he would say and do etc. He gets angry very quickly, but it soon passes. He likes talking and making jokes. He used to be the clown at school, as he would rather that they laughed at his jokes than at his shortcomings (Fluor).

He used to be the black sheep in the family and was the only one who ever dared to open his mouth.

He used to dream about getting rich and giving all his brothers a big, shiny car (Fluor).

He describes himself as easy going, honest, lively, a real 'yuppy' (Fluor).

His is happily married. He always used to have glamorous, long legged, blonde women as girlfriends: 'You had to, to be with it' (Fluor). His wife is a different type: brown hair, small and plump, but very intelligent and warm hearted. He feels much more at ease with her. But he still spent a long time wondering if she was the right one for him (Fluor), because she wasn't the gorgeous blonde that he used to be seen with.

General characteristics:

Temperature: cold, with cold feet; likes thunderstorms.

Perspiration: at night. (<) morning. Desires: spices (3) (Fluor) and meat (2) (Mag). Aversion: sour and meat; grinding teeth at night. Analysis Here we see the themes of Mag and Fluor clearly combined. The aggression and the fear of it, belonging to Mag, and the desire for success, money and glamour belonging to Fluor. The way that the two themes are linked is quite clear as well. He is afraid of getting angry because he might lose his wife or his glittery job. This shows that it is not only necessary for both themes to be present, there should also be a clear link between the two. In this case we have many characteristics of both Magnesium and Fluor. Note the desire for lemon brandy, the lemon for Magnesium and the brandy for Fluor. Reaction The reaction in this case is also very interesting. I had treated this patient for one year, giving him anacardium, nux vomica and gelsemium. He had similar reactions to all three remedies. First there was an aggravation, followed by a gradual amelioration for 1 or 2 months. The amelioration was always only for part of the complaints, including the mental symptoms, but each time he used to fall back to the old level. There was never a real amelioration. But after Mag-f 1M he improved and the improvement lasted for more than a year. He changed his view of the world and realised that his showy behaviour, drinking a lot etc., was very superficial and unfulfilling. Short case Another patient presented a similar picture. This was a man of 35, who was the manager of a big hotel. He was an easy-going business man. His physical complaint was itching on the whole of his body, without eruption. But his mental problems were more his real worry. He had periodical attacks of fear that he didn't really love his wife. He didn't understand it at all, but the thoughts tormented him. His wife suffered a lot every time this happened. The thoughts were partly caused by the fact that his wife is not long legged, busty and blonde, but has dark hair and a normal figure. He used to have similar irrational fears in the past. For instance the fear that he was homosexual, after someone had suggested this to him. Here again he didn't really feel homosexual at all, but he just had the fear. Another typical symptom was repeated dreams about marriage. Once he dreamt that he got married to his sister. In this case we see problems that resemble the problems in the previous case. We also see this happening in types that are similar to each other. They have a great fear that they don't love their wife enough. Picture of Magnesium fluoratum Essence: the idea that aggression will lead to the loss of their job, their money or their wife. Mind: They live with the idea that they have to keep up with society, that they have to achieve a lot. A good job with lots of money is important. Particularly a job in the business world, in banking or sales and marketing. A job with prestige is what counts for them. By having nice clothes, a flashy car and an expensive house they can show that they belong. Their fear is that they won't succeed in getting this, that they will become poor. The effort with which they strive to get their social status is sometimes rather forced. On the one hand they have to be strong and assertive, otherwise others might take over their hard-won space, and on the other hand they can't be too aggressive otherwise they might frighten away their clients, which could cost them their job. So, although they do have an assertive, aggressive side to their character, they are at the same time afraid to show it. Other people's aggression also frightens them, because it might provoke this same anger inside them to come to the foreground. If they can't keep it in check they might lose their job or their money. A beautiful woman, like a fashion model, also fits into this picture. This will be a woman with whom they can show off. If they happen to have a wife who doesn't quite come up to this standard of glamour, they may start to doubt if their choice was correct. This is what lies behind their fear that they don't love their wife. It is also possible that they are afraid of being homosexual. This fear is related to their fear of not being attractive enough as a partner. A typical dream appears to be one wherein he marries his sister. General characteristics: Location: right sided. Temperature: warm. (>) outside.

Time: (<) 7 am. Desires: alcohol (3), spices (3), refreshing food, sour, meat, lemon brandy (2). Sleep: unrefreshing. Physical: (>) movement, violent movement, (>) walking around.
