Synonyms Potassium chloridum, Kali chloridum, Kali chloridum, Chloride of potassium.

Description It is mostly found naturally and present in crystals are colorless, elongated, prismatic or cubical. The powder is white and granular.

The substance is stable in air. The specific gravity is 1.988 and it melts at 772*C.

It is soluble in 2.8 parts of water and in 2 parts of boiling water. It is insoluble in alcohol.

It is prepared by mixing potassium carbonate and hydrochloric acid.

It contains not less than 99 Percent of potassium chloride.

To identify the substance the solution is subjected to chemical tests, characteristics to potassium and chloride.

5 gm. dissolved in 50 ml. of freshly boiled and cooled water requires not more than 0.5 ml of 0.01 N, NaOH or 0.01 N HCI for neutralisation to solution of phenol red.
