PROVING OF ABROMA AUGUSTA FOLIA

by MUZUMDAR K.P

Unlike in the allopathic medicine where the latest discoveries in the field of pharmacology are applied to assess the effects of drugs on the organism in Homoeopathy the principal method of ascertaining the positive effects of drugs is provings. This has been followed ever since Homeopathy was founded in 1798 by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Though the basic concept of drug proving has remained the same from the time of Hahnemann and Drysdale to date, some modifications have taken place in the procedure and working plan depending upon the changes in the mode of thinking and experience in the art of scientific investigation.

The concept of human pharmacology is slowly gathering momentum. The experiments on animals apart from exposing the broad and general effects of the drugs, their toxicity etc., have not fully proved useful and reliable in determining the therapeutic potentiality of the drug especially on the human being.

Drug Proving on the healthy human being therefore is the method adopted by Homeopathy to elicit the positive effects of drugs in the subjective and objective plane of the volunteer who is known as the Prover. The knowledge of this subjective symptomatology cannot be obtained in the animal provings. It is evident, therefore, that Homeopathy had heralded the concept of psychosomatic origin of diseases even though it was established 175 years ago.

Once the symptomatology of a drug on the healthy person is understood it is easier to establish its therapeutic utility in diseases state. Dr. Hahnemann discusses this idea in his Organon of Medicine.(1)

There are over 2000 drugs mentioned in the Homeopathic literature out of which only 800 drugs are proved and their symptomatology understood. The rest of the drugs are proved partially or empirically used on the basis of their use of by the practitioners of electric system of medicine or in tolklore medicine.

We felt it necessary to prove the commonly and empirically used drugs to discover and confirm their full therapeutic potentialities. We also felt a need to prove the many other indigenous drugs used empirically in Homeopathic therapeutics. The observations in Ayurveda in this connection is a wise adage to be remembered in therapeutics.

"The disease conditions peculiar to the land are more amendable to the indigenously grown herbs and drugs produced thereof."

Abroma augusta Linn. is an indigenous plant commonly known as 'Ulatkambal' in Hindi. It was known to the ancient physicians and it is still considered as a popular medicine in the indigenous system as a good still considered as a popular medicine in the congestive and neuralgic variety of dysmenorrhoea. (2) (3) It is claimed that it regulates menstrual flow and acts as an uterine tonic. It is also said to be useful in removing sterility in cases depending upon dysmenorrhoea. The roots and the root bark are used in the preparation of these medications and hence much study is done on these parts of the plant.

Dr. Ray (4) a noted Homeopathic Physician of Calcutta used leaves of Abroma augusta in the preparation of the mother tincture which the prepared in accordance with the instructions contained in the Class III of the American Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. He claims to have obtained good results clinically in diabetes mellitus and insipidus.

Fragmentary provings as reported in the past (4) showed considerable therapeutic potentiality and virtues.

It is, therefore, that the Scientific Advisory Board decided to take up the drug for undergoing a Proving.
