WALNUT :Bach Remedies

- Dr. D.V. Krishnamoorty.

Habits: deep unshakable faith, tendencies etc.-faith in religion, scriptures etc.

Habits derived even from heredity can be broken by walnut.

It is not the ;character or type of the person that can be changed by Walnut, but his habits and customs, what we otherwise call family traits.

The Walnut type of person will usually say You know, it takes some time for me to adjust himself to these new surroundings. I have to get accustomed to a new thing; then it becomes routine.

He starts living in a new house. The bath-room and other things may not be similar to the one he used in the former house. For a certain initial period in the new house, he has difficulty to adjust himself to the new surroundings.

We often hear from some persons that because there was a change of place, they could not get sleep. Walnut will help them to have good sleep in the changed place.

Even after reaching home on completion of two days continuous train journey, he feels as if he is still traveling in the train-the clatter still ringing in his ears. Walnut is the answer to cut the past links.

Ninety per cent of inter-caste marriages end in failure, because of Walnutism (negative aspect of Walnut mentality.) (Note, we use the suffix ism to denote the negative qualities of the remedy.) Let us take, for example, the case of a Hindu youth marrying a Muslim girl or vice versa. They start living together. Soon, problems arise. The one may not like the habits of the other, for he has strong faith in the customs of his own religion which he has acquired by tradition-inheritance. (The extreme walnut type of person never even thinks of inter-caste marriage.) The Hindu partner it meticulous about the contact of saliva which the Muslim partner is not able to accept. The youth hangs pictures of gods and goddesses on the walls, decks them with flowers, lights lamps, burns camphor and prostrates before them, Islam is against even pictorial representation. How will the muslim girl feel about this? She will not be able to tolerate all these which goes against her tradition and belief. Then what about Deepavali, Navarathri and other festivals on the one hand, Muharram and Ramzan on the other? And so on.

Walnut will help both to give the undesirable customs in their respective religions and accept the good ones of the other without revolting against it. A bottleful of pills of walnut will be the correct (not the best) gift to the partners of inter- caste marriage.

Change of climate- change of food - change of region-change of country, town, atmosphere, surroundings. A South Indian normally takes rice meals. When he goes to the North, he had invariable to take chappathi (wheat food) at least once a day particularly in the winter to bear the cold. He feels he cannot accustom himself to chappathis, unable to give up his old custom of eating rice. Walnut will remove his difficulties and enable him to adapt himself to the new type of food.

I went on a tour to several cities; I had to bathe in various waters and drink water of different places. So, I caught a bad cold. Walnut was the remedy for it. Constipation of travelers Constipation of emigrants (Platina has this symptom among homoeopathic remedies.)

During a global tour the strict vegetarian from Indian will find much difficulty during his visit to western countries, because he will have to content himself with fruits, salads and ice-creams only.

Research tends to reveal that hereditary diseases and tendencies can be removed by Walnut. Only habit-forming things become hereditary and so Walnut should cure all such inheritance- tubercular taint, cancerous diathesis, etc. Asthma running in families. Baldness that is in heredity Migraine, haemophilia.

A typical Walnut patient: This was a lady of thirty-five who had prophetic dreams which she was casually telling others as if it was a great thing to possess. She consulted us for frequent urging to urinate and some other complaints. We arrived at Cannabis Indica on the totality-of-her-symptoms; this remedy, incidentally, also put an and to her prophetic dreams, she hurriedly objected to it; No, I don't want to loss it. We have been maintaining this as a tradition in our family. We explained to her that we were not aiming at giving a medicine to remove her tendency to get prophetic dreams, but that it was a symptom of disease (and not health) and the remedy would stop not only her entrance complaint of frequent urination but also the prophetic dreams. She said she was prepared to bear with the urinary trouble so that she could retain the faculty of having prophetic dreams. Here status of mind illustrates that religious and family customs take a strong held on a person-Walnut is the remedy to make her sensible by getting herself freed from the past undesirable link and thus enable her to consent to take Cannabis Indica to cure her of the urinary troubles. (She is not concerned whether the prophetic dreams is a good or great things to possess even at the cost of having the urinary troubles. What is important is retaining the family tradition-a typical Walnut mentality indeed!)

Every person will say his religion is the best. If he is an authority on religions then his verdict can be justified. Otherwise, he is to be classified as a Walnut type. We do not teach anyone that he should not follow his religion, not do we ever say that a particular religion is the best. What we want to say is that by taking Walnut, a person can realise the prejudices he has acquired because of his having been borne in a family of a particular religion. He will realise after taking Walnut what are the features in his religion that he should adopt. He will adopt them because he know they are really good and not merely because they belong to his religion.

New ideas and things which contradict our belief of several years, we have a tendency to reject, or even revolt against, without even caring to examine whether there is truth in such new ideas. This is because we are so deeply attached to our beliefs.

Ah! What a boon Walnut would be for a country like India, which abounds in different sects of peoples, religions and castes and subsects in each religion, sub-castes, etc. each maintaining that its own system is the best.

Hindu-Muslim hostility is a chronic problem facing India, At the time of partition of Pakistan (in the year 1947 during independence) how many persons of both the communities were murdered! We read even today recurrent reports in the dailies about communal riots.

If Walnut were added to the drinking water in the tank that supplies water to the residents of sensitive areas, these quarrels can be prevented. Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Godse (a Hindu) because the letter thought that Gandhiji was working for Muslims and against Hinduism. Given walnut Godse would not have acted as he did. Here, we are not concerned with the Gandhian principles but only are examining the negative mentality of Godse. The same Gandhiji, because he was wedded to ahimsa (non-violence) ordered to shoot down an animal in his ashram which was in agony due to some disease- another mentality of Walnutism.

A person born in a strict vegetarian family will not accept your suggestion to take egg for a particular serious illness of his. If the cure will take a month more without egg, he will say, I am prepared for it. Even if it means dying, I am prepared to be without egg that living by consuming egg. So deep-rooted is the vegetarianism in his mind. (Here, we do not support non- vegetarianism or we are against vegetarianism. It is only an attempt to illustrate the mental state of Walnut.)

Can you give me some medicine? I want to stop my cigarette habit. The question have you, tried to stop it yourself? the answer is Oh! No! I cannot do without a cigarette. It is a habit. I have been smoking for the last eighteen years. Walnut is the remedy for this man.

On the other hand, if the answer is: I have attempted it and refrained from cigarettes several times for a short period. But whenever I see someone smoking I am unable to resist the temptation, though I fell I should not do it, and try to resist, sometimes it is beyond my control and I take a cigarette. This points to the remedy CHERRY PLUM. (Any remedy out of the thirty- eight Bach Remedies may be needed for a given individual to stop smoking, and the remedy has to be selected on his mind symptoms- See Advanced Practice of Flower Remedies in our second months lessons.)

Masturbation, nail-biting, thumb-sucking in children, excessive consumption of coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol Walnut cures all these undesirable habits. Western countries are faced with a new problem, viz., drug-addiction, alcoholism, and sedative-addiction. All addicts can be cured with Walnut or Cherry Plum.

Note: Blinking of eyes may be a case of either walnut of WHITE CHESTNUT.

If I don't take my customary morning coffee, I will get head ache. This is walnut.

When he has not had his morning coffee on some day and is, therefore, having a headache, he may need any remedy according to his symptoms at that time. But to prevent headache we may give walnut on the previous evening or night.

By analogy we may try walnut in diseases that fail to yield to ordinary treatment or repeated doses in various schools of medicine. It is a difficult thing to make a person give up a belief-a symptom of Walnut. So also, Walnut may be thought of in diseases that resist the best treatment, (The relevant remedies in homoeopathy are those listed under GENERALITIES-REACTION, lack of in kents Repertory.)

In the absence of any striking mental symptoms we may extend the use of flower remedies to physical symptoms by analogy. E.G. for complaints that is of the same type and constancy leucoderma, ringworm, Persistent cough etc. WHITE CHESTNUT may be considered. This remedy has many times helped us in cases of cough that is constant, whooping cough, malaria etc. where the symptoms appear repeatedly and are of the same type.

Take persons of various nationalities or religions working in the same office in an international organisation. They start forming groups of different sects-a Malayali group, a Punjabi group, and so on. Walnut added to the drinking water in the office will make things so smoothly. Everyone will start thinking I am a member of the staff of this office or organization and not a Malayali or Madrassi.

Following the teachings of a particular philosopher. (If he simply imitates a philosopher, then CERATO is the remedy. CERATO and Walnut may seen to be similar in their symptomatology. But a close examination of the two remedies will show us the difference. A person may follow a person or have a belief merely because it is in their family tradition Walnut. If he has a strong belief in a philosopher, then it is CERATO. Walnuts belief or following a person is due to tradition. In the case of the remedy CERATO he feels that a particular person in the field is the best and so becomes a fan or student of him.

Let us now come to the picture of Walnut. Identifies himself with a political party. Therefore, he always talks in favour of that party and against other parties. It has even become a fashion to ask To which party do you belong? Every party has good points as well as weaknesses. But the Walnut type of person, if he joins a party will stress its good qualities. If he joins some other party then he will talk ill of his previous party.

Groupisms: When a shop-keeper in a town (on the high way) is offended by a passenger in a bus that halts there, the other shop-keepers in the town join hands with the offended shopkeeper and other passengers in the bus form the opposite side even without caring to know which side is at fault-A True picture of Walnut indeed.

This was heard the other day in an Association meeting of homoeopaths: May be Dr. X has drawbacks; but we should not on that account expose him. He too is a homoeopath. We have to consider him as a homoeopath first, then only a black sheep.

Words used by Walnut type of persons: If one member of a community doesn't stand by a brother-member, what can be worse than it?

A Walnut type of person wont be prepared to marry a girl borne in a community different from his.

A person in a senior post in an organisation or government office shows favours to one of his sub-ordinates merely because that person belongs to the same community as he. (Compare CHICORY also for this.)

Another Walnut type of person, a South Indian living in North India was telling another South Indian You see, though himself a South Indian, he has reported against Mr. X (another South Indian). Is it proper?

Cannot tolerate change from old surroundings etc. Complaints aggravated during change of weather may require Walnut. (Pulsatilla etc. in homoeopathy.)

Look at the allopath who has been indoctrinated for five years that bacteria are the cause of diseases, He has been brainwashed to accept all of it as right. See how he reacts to homoeopathy. So also, the ardent homoeopath (who claims to be a pure Hahnemannian homoeopath) who has been made to believe in homoeopathic tradition that a drug must be proved before use) defensively reacts to flower remedies! You see, there are no provings in it. No potencies. How can they cure? He is so immersed in homoeopathy that anything not potentised or proved is not a drug for him.

If you tell a Walnut type of person: Man, why don't you chuck this tobacco habit in view of your doctors warning for your heart? he answers, How to, Sir? It has become a habit. I cant do without it. Can you leave habits? Only if I have a cup of coffee immediately after brushing my teeth in the morning, I can think of doing anything.

A deep-rooted Walnutism: I would rather die at the hands of a homoeopath than live by getting treatment and cure from an allopath.

It is of course true that unless one gets absorbed in and enthusiastic about a subject he cannot master it thoroughly. Walnut only removes the side-effects of over-absorption in a subject or thing. Maniac for a particular thing or system. When the mentally overwrought research worker turns maniac, Walnut (also VERVAIN) may be thought of Oak is for even confidence.

Look at the allopath who scrupulously washes his hands with dettol etc. after he has touched a patient even though the latter is not afflicted with any contagious disease. He has been so trained.

When you want to introduce homoeopathy or flower remedies to an intelligent allopath or homoeopath respectively and if they do not want even to give a fair trial you may some how keep them on a course of Walnut.

Some allopaths are already practicing homoeopathy and flower remedies too. It is not to be supposed from this that they do not have Walnutism. Only a few of the allopaths practicing homoeopathy are having positive mentally of Walnut. Others are negative Walnut type only, and the truth of this statement will be realised when we carefully study the personal life of these allopaths. They have taken to homoeopathy not necessarily because it is effective or scientific, but because they are spiritualism-mongers type of Walnut patients. They have an interest in religion, spiritualism, astrology, mysticism etc.- all occult subjects and therefore consider that homoeopathy also is part of mysticism and is spiritual (this is owing to the fact that Dr. Hahnemann has used the words. spirit-like dynamic force the invisible vital force almighty etc. in his Organon of Medicine, because homoeopathy is concerned with will symptoms and the mind and tiny pills that too in single dose is being used.

If homoeopathy is being practised in India by a large number of persons (which number has never been so high in the past in any single country) it is only because spiritualism is more acceptable to the people of India. Naturally they thought they should identify their subject of spiritualism with homoeopathy. It is these spiritualism mongers in India who contributed to the largeness of the number of homoeopaths.

One more evidence to show that many allopaths practising homoeopathy or flower remedies are of the Walnut type is the fact that however hard we may try to convince them that homoeopathy is scientific, they say No, no, it has something to connect human beings with the upper world. Even the contents of lesson 1 in our book Advanced Homoeopathic Practice failed to convince them that homoeopathy is scientific. They are not prepared to accept that homoeopathy is superior to allopathy, rather advanced-allopathy.

We do not mean to say that one should not take to spiritualism or any subject like astrology etc. But one should be on guard against the negative aspects of Walnut. Look at the Walnut type of astrologer, while listening to an argument draws the conclusion that everything is pre-destined and things can be known in advanced by observing the movement of planets (astrology)

We can write on marry more interesting aspects of this remedy, but it may offend many readers (because of their pre- conceived notions), and so we stop here. As we do not want to identify ourselves with Dr. Bach-ism or his philosophy to such an extend as to say, Bach remedies are the answer to all problems of mankind we stop here. We only want to say: Here too is a new method and those interested can learn it. We do not say that Dr. Bach remedies are the only or the best answer to all things like an astrologer who may say that astrology can provide answers to all problems.

We do not claim any devotion to popularising Bach Remedies Practice. That would amount to our becoming or being of the Walnut type ourselves!

We have tabulated the differences between homoeopathy and Dr. Bach Remedies on page 4 of our book BEGINNERS GUIDE TO BACH FLOWER REMEDIES. By this we never meant to attribute superiority of flower remedies to homoeopathy. Whenever we have stress the salient features of a thing, we use the word best. For example one verse of thirukkural says that of all the gifts of life, the sense of hearing (meaning knowledge obtained by listening to the teacher) is the most esteemed, and is the most precious of all possessions (wealth). Another verse of the same Thirukkural says that children are the greatest of wealth.

Saying that knowledge obtained by listening to educated men is the best does not imply that wealth of children is of less value, Both are of high value. So also, the question of either of these two (viz., homoeopathy or Dr. Bach Remedies) becoming universally the best does not arise.

Were we of the Walnut type, as homoeopaths, we would not have accepted or started studying flower remedies. Because we had taken Walnut ourselves we could see that flower remedies have another important role besides disease-curing agents (such as go- getter domain mentioned on page....)

If we were of the Walnut type, we would say that our Institute is the best for teaching flower remedies of that we are sacrificing ourselves in the cause of Dr. Bach remedies.

We only say that until and unless a more talented person comes forward to take up our present job of teaching Dr. Bach remedies we will continue our job. As and when such a person comes for-ward we would readily yield this chair to such a suitable person and we will go in for a field more suitable to us than Dr. Bach remedies.

The question of :devotion burning the midnight oil for a cause, sacrifice doing the best service etc. does not find a place in the vocabulary of a bach-ism man (meaning a correct way of thinking and living as taught by the flower remedies otherwise known as Dr. Bach philosophy).
