Definition - vertigo :
It is a sensation of turning either of one's self or of the surroundings orof the, brain within the head.
It is always accompanied by a disturbance of equilibrium.
Definition - syncope :
Transient of consciousness with inability to maintain postural tone due tocerebral anaemia.
Treatment - vertigo:
Conium maculatum
This is an important remedy for vertigo as it covers many causative factors which give rise to vertigo.
An old bachelor may come, complaining of vertigo , by slightestmovement , slightest movement of head or eyes or quickly turningthe head ; by lying down in bed and turning the head especially on left and on looking down.
Sensation as if "bed turning in a circle" .
Vertigo with headache.
Vertigo felt ion occiput.
Cannot tolerate any alcoholic drinks. Vertigo with tendency to fall sideways. Intoxicated feeling. Staggering.
Vertigo with nausea.
A characteristic symptom - patient perspires profusely on closing theeyes .
agg. When rising.
>> Closing the eyes .
Nux vomica
It is indicated for vertigo as well as syncope or fainting - Unconsciousness.
Vertigo from digestive disorders . Epileptic. Hysterical. Concomitant - Dim vision and diplopia. Headache. Intoxicated feeling. With staggering, trembling and Tendency to fall backwards; sideways.
Reeling and whirling vertigo.
Vertigo in a Crowd.
Objects turn in a circle.
Generals are important for selecting this remedy.
agg. Mental exertion , noises, odor of flowers ,open air. When eating, dinner after, when rising from bed or chair, when rising in morning, evening, alcoholic liquor, sleep after, smoking , stooping, loss of sleep , coffee, 8 to 9 p.m. , during pregnancy, menses.
>> Eating, wrapping head, free discharges. O/E Frowning look, post. coating of tongue, tenderness in left iliac fossa.
Tabacum
Vertigo with headache and deathly nausea . Periodical. Intoxicated feeling. Reeling vertigo.
Concomitants - debility and prostration.
Vertigo from immoderate smoking of cigars.
Excessive vertigo with copious sweat.
Seasickness.
agg. Opening eyes , looking upward, rising on, when entering warm room,motion.
>> Open air , closing eyes, perspiration , vomiting .
O/E Deathly pale pinched look. Icy cold skin.
Sanguinaria canadensis
Vertigo with headache and nausea ; with vomiting at the end. Heaviness in the abdomen. Characteristic headache - Right sided , periodical, by going in sun. Concomitant - Climaxis - flushes.
agg. Looking upwards , stooping, turning head quickly , coldweather.
>> Sleep, passing flatus.
Cocculus indicus
Vertigo of cerebral or nervous origin .
With tendency to fall side ways.
With headache and nausea .
Intoxicated feeling.
Must lie down.
Things move from right to left .
Incoordination, tremors.
Occiput opens and shuts sensation. Hysterical vertigo with floating sensation.
agg. Heat , when eating, motion, rising from bed, sitting while, loss of sleep , standing, during stool, wine.
>> Lying down , warmth of bed.
Theridion curassavicum
[THERIDION]
Vertigo with nausea, on closing eyes with Menière's disease; of nervousorigin.
Vertigo with nausea and vomiting on least motion.
Seasickness.
Vertigo as if going to faint.
agg. Closing eyes , noises, stooping, sleep after.
Gelsemium sempervirens
RS [GELSEMIUM]
Vertigo with diplopia , dimness and ocular muscles paralysis.
Nervous origin.
Beginning in nape of neck or occiput .
Concomitant - Buzzing, tinnitus with headache and intoxicated feeling.
With staggering, trembling and weakness.
Vertigo felt in forehead. Head feels light and large with vertigo. Incoordination-sensation of falling. Child clings to nurse with fear of falling (Bor.).
agg. Smoking, turning the head quickly, emotion , heat.
>> Profuse urination.
O/E Paralysis of ocular muscles with either hypertension or hypotension.
Granatum
Vertigo with salivation and nausea .
Very persistent vertigo.
If associated symptoms like constant hunger, pain about umbilicus, tapeworm infestation and itching of palms are there, they would be additional indications.
agg. Looking up .
Phosphorus
It is an important remedy for vertigo as well as syncope .
Vertigo of the aged, nervous in origin.
After rising, with staggering, trembling and weakness.
Periodical and chronic vertigo.
Sensation of ascending.
Chair seems to rise with him.
Vertigo with heart symptoms.
Vertigo in forehead.
Vertigo due to loss of fluids .
General symptoms like thin, tall persons, craving for cold drinks and salts, fear of thunderstorm and dark, bleeding tendency etc... will also be useful in selecting this remedy.
agg. Rising on, looking downwards or upwards , lying on left side , rising after, rising from bed, kneeling while, eating whileand after, on entering a room, odor of flowers, periodically, sitting while,walking while, eye exertion.
>> Stool and lying down.
China officinalis
It is an important remedy for fainting as well as vertigo.
Black-out before eyes due to loss of fluids and anaemia.
Vertigo with congestion of brain.
Intoxicated feeling, staggering, debility.
Tendency to fall backwards.
Sensation of gliding in the air , as if feet did not touch the ground.
agg. After sleep, rising on from bed, raising head, chill during, walking in open air, motion.
>> While lying .
Chininum sulphuricum
[CHINA SULPH]
Vertigo with tinnitus. Spine-ache-cervicodorsal.
Menière's disease. Anaemia of brain. Vertigo with nausea.
Turning as if in a circle.
Concomitant - buzzing, roaring in ears with deafness.
agg. Periodical , left side, standing.
Aconitum napellus
[ACONITE NAPELLUS]
Important for vertigo as well as fainting.
Vertigo from sudden fright with headache, nausea, vomiting withfear of death and restlessness .
Apoplexy - unconsciousness.
Intoxicated feeling.
Tendency to fall on right.
Vertigo from fall or concussion.
agg. Rising from sitting or lying position , fright, during menses suppressed menses, standing, during urination, shaking and turning of head, stooping, dry cold wind.
>> Deep breathing.
Agaricus muscarius
Vertigo with confusion of mind.
Vertigo from sunlight, on walking.
Reeling and whirling vertigo.
Tendency to fall forwards.
Reading difficult as types seem to move.
Icy coldness in head, like icy needles.
agg. Open air .
>> Quickly turning the head , (rev. of Con.).
Ailanthus glandulosa
[AILANTHUS]
Vertigo with staggering.
Rapid prostration, lividity, advancing malignancy and stupor.
Faint on rising up or vertigo agg. lying.
agg. Hot drinks.
O/E Face hot and cold sweat.
Apis mellifica
Epileptic vertigo . Vertigo with sneezing. Awkward - drops things readily. Sudden starting during sleep.
Ailments from jealously, fright and rage.
General symptoms are important.
agg. Closing eyes (Chel.), lying down, sitting thanwalking, evening and spring, heat.
>> Cool open air.
Argentum metallicum
Vertigo with intoxicated feeling.
On looking at running water .
Head feels empty, hollow. Sudden vertigo, paroxysmal and periodical.
agg. In bed, night, mental strain, crossing running water.
>> Open air.
Argentum nitricum
Vertigo of nervous origin or epileptic origin.
Vertigo with buzzing in ears and headache, with dim vision and diplopia,staggering, intoxicated feeling and debility.
Turning as if in a circle.
Sensation as if high walls would fall on him.
Craves sugar and sweets which disagree.
agg. Looking at high buildings , morning, closing eyes,entering in dark and closed room.
>> Cool open air.
Baptisia tinctoria
[BAPTISIA]
Vertigo with pressure at the root of the nose.
With nausea, debility and prostration.
Vertigo with rapidly turning septic state .
Swimming sensation.
Confusion as if drunk with paralysis of eye-lids.
agg. Stooping and noise.
O/E Dull, drowsy besotted look . Tongue heavily coated.
Belladonna
Sudden vertigo of cerebral origin or from congestion ofbrain with typical Belladonna headache - pulsations in head.
Concomitants - dim vision, diplopia, palpitation, heart symptoms, nausea,tinnitus.
With tendency to fall backward or to left.
Intoxicated feeling.
Objects reel - turning as if in a circle.
As if bed bounced her up and down - or sinking with or through bed.
agg. Rising from chair or bed, stooping, walking when lying down, motion , moving the head, rising on - specially from stooping, turningin bed, when crossing running water.
O/E Pupils dilated , head hot and extremities cold.
Bryonia alba
Useful for vertigo as well as fainting, unconsciousness.
Labyrinthic origin with nausea, gastro-enteric derangement or liver disturbances .
Chill before vertigo.
Tendency to run backward, with tendency to fall backward or forward. Intoxicated feeling.
Objects reel, turning as if in a circle.
Concomitant - nose-bleed.
Sensation of sinking down through or with the bed .
With general symptoms like constipation, thirst etc...
agg. Motion , moving the head, raising head or sitting up in bed.
>> Lying down.
O/E Dry tongue.
Calcarea carbonica
[CALCAREA CARB]
Useful for vertigo as well as syncope.
With headache and nausea.
Epileptic vertigo. Chill during vertigo.
Elevated feeling. Vertigo in vertex with tendency to fall backward or sideways . Vertigo on high places.
Staggering, turning as if in a circle .
agg. When ascending stairs, when shaking or turning head, after emission, looking upward, during menses, when moving the head, rest, rising on,after sleep, standing, stooping.
Calcarea sulphurica
[CALCAREA SULPH]
Vertigo with acute or chronic otitis media , with yellowish white pus.
With all other symptoms of Calc. carb.
Vertigo with nausea.
agg. Moving the head quickly, walking.
Cannabis indica
Vertigo when rising - with stunning pain in back of head and he falls.
Pressure on brain - must stoop.
Exaggeration of time and space .
Sensation of skull opening and shutting. (Cocc.).
agg. When rising from bed or chair, walking.
>> Rest.
Carboneum sulphuratum
[CARBON SULPH]
Chilly patient.
Abuse of alcohol .
Menière's disease - tinnitus aureum and sudden vertigo.
agg. Stooping , walking in open air, warm and damp weather.
>> Open air.
Chelidonium majus
[CHELIDONIUM]
Vertigo associated with hepatic disturbances .
Objects seem to turn in a circle.
Inclination to fall forward.
agg. Closing eyes , during headache, on rising from bed.
General symptoms must be taken into consideration when prescribing thisremedy.
Cyclamen europaeum
[CYCLAMEN]
`Transparent vertigo' - Objects turn in a circle or about her same object is seen standing solid and immovable through the whirl e.g. a candle is seen turning and rotating and through this whirling candle he sees a solid candle which is stationary.
Vertigo with obscuration of vision .
Vertigo with nausea and vomiting.
agg. Open air , leaning against anything, during menses.
Suppressed menses, resting.
>> In a warm room.
Digitalis purpurea
[DIGITALIS]
Vertigo with cardiac complication . With trembling.
Vertigo with very slow pulse (Adams Stokes syndrome).
Irregular pulse .
Vertigo with anxiety as if she would faint.
Constant dizziness with ringing in ears.
As if heart would stop if moved.
Feels as if sinking down through or with the bed while lying.
agg. White rising, riding, rising from kneeling position.
Dulcamara
Momentary vertigo with black-out before eyes.
Weakness and trembling. Associated cold.
>> After sleep.
Lycopodium clavatum
[LYCOPODIUM]
Vertigo with digestive or urinary complaints .
General symptoms are very important for selection of this remedy.
Objects move in a circle.
Reeling.
Tendency to fall.
Vertigo with nausea.
agg. In hot room, while drinking, morning , on rising, riding in a carriage, stooping, cold drinks, 4 to 8 p. m .
Natrium muriaticum
[NATRUM MURIATICUM]
Epileptic vertigo.
Vertigo with cold .
Chronic vertigo with one-sided headache .
During pregnancy.
Vertigo with nausea.
Tendency to fall forward and to the left.
From looking steadily.
Flickering before eyes.
Objects seem to turn in a circle.
Periodical vertigo.
Quite often useful after Bryonia alba.
agg. From coffee, smoking, alcohol, morning, on rising, when reading, exertion,walking and lying down.
Natrium carbonicum
[NATRUM CARB]
Vertigo from wine .
In sunlight .
With all general symptoms and specially headache.
Hypersensitive persons.
agg. Heat, sunlight, mental exertion, thunderstorm, night.
>> Lying-down.
O/E Yellow spots on face.
Onosmodium virginianum
[ONOSMODIUM]
Vertigo associated with sexual neurasthenia and muscularprostration.
Ocular muscles tense, eyes heavy and dull with muscular asthenopia.
Associated occipito-frontal or left sided headache .
Misjudges distance.
Fears to look down .
Incoordination, staggering.
agg. Motion, jar, lying on left side , eye strain.
>> Lying down on back, rest and cold drinks.
Opium
Vertigo after fright with fleeting sensation .
Flying or hovering.
Compels him to lie down.
Apoplectic vertigo.
Intoxicated feeling and staggering when walking.
As if all the things in a circle with him .
Fainting on lying down .
Tendency to fall forward.
Vertigo of old age.
agg. Rising in morning, after sleep, heat.
>> Drinking water and cold things.
Petroleum
Vertigo with intoxicated feeling.
With Menière's disease .
Simulating seasickness with nausea and vomiting.
beginning in nape of neck or occiput .
More violent when standing than sitting.
With numbness all over the body.
Tendency to fall forward.
agg. Looking upwards , stooping , riding in carriage, winter,before and during thunderstorm. Mental exertion, walking up, from kneeling position. Walking , rising from bed, stool after.

Pulsatilla pratensis
[PULSATILLA]
Vertigo with gastro-enteric derangement .
With nausea and vomiting, with headache.
Vertigo as if turning in a circle.
Compelled to lie down.
Objects seem to be too far off.
Tendency to fall forward.
Intoxicated as if .
agg. Rising on in the morning , while eating , stooping , evening , heat, menses before and during , sitting while .

Rhus toxicodendron
Vertigo of old age.
Nervous origin with tendency to fall to the right.
Sensation of floating in air .
Reeling vertigo.
With nausea.
agg. Rising on, rising from kneeling , lying down, when walkingclosing eyes, after eating.
O/E Red triangular tip of tongue.
Secale cornutum
Chronic vertigo with feeling of lightness of head especially occiput .
In cachectic subjects.
Intoxicated feeling.
Tendency to fall forward.
agg. While undressing, heat.

Silicea terra
[SILICEA]
Useful for anaemia of brain as well as vertigo.
Begins in nape of neck or creeps up the spine.
Tendency to fall forward, backward or to the right of left.
Epileptic vertigo.
Menière's disease - roaring in ears.
Vertigo during sleep .
As if head were teeming with live things whirling around it.
agg. Motion, looking up, closing eyes , new moon, suppressedfoot sweat, lying on left side.

O/E Palms and soles perspiring, white spots in the nails.
Sulphur
Vertigo due to congestion of brain.
Senile vertigo.
Constant dizziness, standing is the worst position.
Heat of vertex , throbbing headache.

Ferrum metallicum
Vertigo due to anaemia of brain.
With balancing sensation.
With tendency to fall forwards.
With staggering and intoxicated feeling.
With nausea.
With obscuration of vision .
Vertigo on seeing flowing water.

Phytolacca decandra

Vertigo with staggering.
Obstruction in vision.
Diplopia , upper half of object invisible.

Aurum metallicum

Syphilitic vertigo.
Vertigo with tendency to fall to left .
Vertigo with roaring in head.
As if intoxicated.
Lying down necessary during vertigo.

Camphora bromata

Hysterical.
Feels he is journeying in one direction, when actually moving in theopposite direction.
Feels he is going in north instead of south though house numbers showit is not so.
Innumerable black flies are flitting over the field of vision.
Salicylicum acidum
Vertigo with Menière's disease .
With tendency to fall to left .
With tinnitus aureum and deafness .
Roaring and ringing in ears.
Headache, confusion in head on rising suddenly.
Sensation as if objects move to the right.
Ceanothus americanus
[CEANOTHUS AMERICANA]
Violent vertigo on lying down and turning to right side.
Everything turns to right and patient has to hold the side of bed.
Cuprum metallicum
Vertigo with headache .
Epileptic vertigo.
With obscuration of vision.
With congestion of brain.
Giddiness accompanies many ailments.
Head falls forward on chest.
Periodical .
Sensation as if water were poured over head.
agg. Looking upwards , moving the head, sitting while, sitting up in bed, before menses.
>> During perspiration.
Zincum iodatum
Vertigo and belching of winds after food.
With coldness in lumbar region.
Cough, constipation and tuberculosis may be associated.
Gratiola officinalis
Vertigo during and after meals .
Rush of blood to head with vanishing of sight.
Sensation as if brain was contracting and head became smaller.
Tightness in forehead.
With myopia.
agg. Eating while , eating after , while riding, drinking toomuch water.
>> Open air.
Carbo animalis
Vertigo followed by nose bleeding.
Hearing confused, cannot tell direction of sound.
Tendency to fall backward.
With nausea.
With staggering.
agg. Morning, rising on, rising from kneeling, from stooping.
Treatment - syncope
Moschus
Hysterical.
Talks excitedly or scolds until she faints.
Headache with coldness, faintness and palpitation.
Sudden nervous suffocation or anxious palpitation.
Fainting with nausea.
Sensation as if falling from great height.
agg. Coughing, during menses, stooping.
Linaria vulgaris
[LINARIA]
Cardiac fainting.
Fainting without apparent cause.
Also useful for enuresis.
agg. Open air.
>> Tea with milk.
Trillium pendulum
Fainting with haemorrhagic tendency.
Thyreoidinum
[THYROIDINUM]
Fainting with hypothyroidism.
Fainting with palpitation, low blood pressure, cold hands and feet.
Persistent frontal headache.
agg. Least exertion.
O/E Low blood pressure and signs of hypothyroidism.
