Bothrops atrox, H A Roberts, The Homoeopathic Recorder Vol. LIII, No. 5, May 1938
Introduction
The data accumulated by four provers of Bothrops atrox provided the following data, the provers being of the following ages: A, male 65 years; B, male, 35 years; C, female, 25 years; D, female 60 years. A C and D took one powder of Bothrops atrox 200c, each; B took two powders as an interval of three hours. A and B took the dose in February 1934; C in July 1936; D in June 1937.
The record of A's proving covered 43 days; B's 57 days; C's 36 days; D's 52 days. Only A knew the remedy which was being taken, and as there were no provings available this could not have influenced the record of the symptoms. A and B report some recurrence of symptoms ever since, and there seems to be an approximate annual recurrence.
The first action of the remedy seems to be on the heart and region, where there is both pain and a sense of weight; there is also a profound reaction on the nervous system and this reaction seems to be closely related to the heart symptoms; this reaction is manifest in the exhaustion, the depression and the apprehension which radiate from the chest and abdomen, in the profound effects of shock from pain, and the trembling (both internal and external), and in the shuddering without coldness.
The sticking and stabbing pains are characteristic, three of the four provers recording them. These pains come and go suddenly; stabbing into the head, from the eye back into the head, at the back of the eyeball, in the chest, through the chest to the back, etc.
We cannot doubt that with more female provers within the childbearing age we should find more symptoms centring in the sexual sphere, as in the one prover coming within this group, the sexual symptoms were strongly marked.
In recording the symptoms in the encyclopedic form, as follows, note that after each symptom the initial of the prover is given, and following it, the figure corresponding to the number of the day or the days after the administration of the substance on which the symptom appeared in that individual.
