 This remedy is made from rue, a native of southern Europe that grows wild almost anywhere on dry soil. Its common names include Herb of Grace. The name rue derives from the Greek 'reuo', meaning 'to set free', because the herb was efficacious in treating so many diseases. Shakespeare mentions it in Richard III: 'I'll set a bank of rue, sour herb of grace.' Rue water was sprinkled in houses to keep away fleas. The homoeopathic remedy is made from the fresh herb, chopped, pounded and the juice expressed. It is allowed to stand in alcohol and succussed.
 Ruta may be considered a specific remedy for injuries to fibrous tissue, ligaments, tendons and cartilage, and for the main joints such as ankles, wrists, knees, shoulders and hips.
 Causation: Overexertion, injury, sprains, over-use.
 Worse from: Cold, damp or wet weather, lying on the injured limb, sitting, overexertion, ascending or descending steps, lying, sitting.
 Better from: Warmth, rubbing, gentle motion, rest if he can find a comfortable position, but too much rest makes him worse. Lying on back.
 Complaints: Strained and damaged ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Inflammation of tendons and ligaments. Deep bruising of the periosteum. Bruised, sore, aching joints and connective tissue. It is very useful after prolonged strenuous exertion, when the effects show in tendons and ligaments. Sleeps badly with frequent waking, yawning. Restlessness, has to move to get comfortable. Lameness, weakness, parts lain on become sore. Stiffness in tendons better after movement.
 Upper limbs: Wrenching pain in shoulder, especially when arms hang down. Acute rotator cuff tears. Fibrosis and thickening of the tendon. Tendonitis in the rotator cuff and shoulder. Injuries to the sterno-
 clavicular joint and strains to the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments. Will reduce painful swelling over the acromioclavicular joint and reduce pain on scapulothoracic movement. Aids repair of the ligaments after dislocation. Helps to prevent recurrent dislocation of glenohumeral joint. Dull pain in elbow and feeling of contusion. Tennis elbow. Epicondylitis and tenosynovitis in the elbow. Tears and sprains to elbow ligaments. Bones and joints feel as if they have been beaten. Pain in wrist when lifting weight, wrist feels sprained. Instability of wrist after damage to ligaments.
 Lower limbs: Spring ligament strains. Legs feel weak and unsteady, especially ascending or descending stairs. Weakness in hip and thigh when rising from a seat. Feeling of contraction in tendons of knee. Aching in hip, knee and/or ankle. Lameness in the ankle after injury, sprain or dislocation. Ankles swollen, rheumatic pain in ankles. Hamstrings feel short. Pain in hip after unaccustomed stretching, especially when arthritic conditions are suspected. Laxity or rupture of the cruciate ligaments causing weakness and unsteadiness. Knee gives way on ascending and descending steps. Infrapatellar tendinitis, sprained medial and lateral ligaments. Suspected meniscus tears. Shin splints and peroneus tertius tendinitis.  Back: Drawing pain in neck and between scapulae. Shooting pain in lumbar region when walking, bending and sitting, or only when sitting. Lumbar region feels bruised. Backache, better from pressure and when lying on the back. Pain in coccyx after a fall.
 Mental/Emotional: Depressed about recovery, dissatisfied with himself and others about his injury, and after prolonged exertion. Despair of recovery, says 'This is probably the end of my playing days.' Anxious and guilty about being injured. Painful weariness. Unwilling to do rehabilitative exercises.
