20th Century History of Medicine:

According to the Gregorian calendar, The 20th century started on 1 January 1901st and ended on 31st December 2000,. but In the view of medical history it would be more appropriate to consider the 1st half of the 20th Century as the continuation of the second half of the 19th Century rather than as the beginning of a separate era. The twentieth century was a period of radical departure in almost every human activity had been done in the past. Accelerating the scientific understanding, better communications, faster transportation are transformed the world in those hundred years more than any time in the past.
The medical Scientists of second half of 19th Century sowed the seeds, that which are blossomed in the opening decades of the 20th Century, as we have seen. medicine in the second half of the 19th century emerged as a science and the creative forces at work were the adoption of experimental method in medical investigations and the introduction of the biological or evolutionary view of morphology and physiology. As a result of the labors of the medical scientist of the second half of the 19th century in medicine may be said to have had a new birth. “This new birth is nothing less than an enlargement from an art of observation and empiricism to an applied science founded upon research; from a craft of tradition and sagacity to an applied science of analysis and law; from a descriptive code of surface phenomena to the discovery of deeper affinities; from a set of rules and axioms of quality to measurement of quantity”.
“The advancement of scientific medicine in the second half of the 19th century was characterized by the introduction of a biological or evolutionary view of morphology and physiology, out of which came the sciences of cellular pathology, bacteriology and parasitology, new modes of seeing disease and its causes”.
Virchow (1821-1902 A.D.) animated the biological or evolutionary view of morphology and physiology. The observations may have led great beginning on cancer research. The research did not come to a halt with the isolation, determination of the chemical structure and synthesis of the hormones. It was carried further with startling revelations.
