Cuprum aceticum [Cupr-acet]:

- Jan Scholten

Cuprum aceticum is described in Boericke and Clarke.

I have had a most unusual opportunity to get to know this remedy.

I had been invited to attend the sun dance ritual of the Lakota Indians in South Dakota. This ritual is performed over 4 days during which time the dancers don't eat or drink anything. The medicine man had asked me beforehand whether I would be able to assist if there were any problems with the sun dancers, who often developed cramps during these rituals. I immediately thought of Cuprum and asked Rienk Stuut to send me some. This he did, choosing Cuprum aceticum as the most likely remedy, considering the ascetic aspect of the occasion.

Work is stark and hard. Lonely through criticism. Picture of Cuprum aceticum Essence: ritualistic abstinence. Working seriously and denying your own needs They have a tendency to work very hard and to deny themselves all sorts of basic needs. As if they have to fulfil their duty whatever the cost. Ascetic rituals A typical situation is that of ascetic rituals. By repeating fixed patterns and abstaining from eating, drinking or having sex, they hope to get into a trance. The trance is meant to make contact with the spirit world, to receive messages and to bring sacrifices for the sake of the family and the well being of the tribe. Rigid abstinence The self imposed abstinence can get too a bit too rigid, they don't know when to stop anymore. They carry on against better judgment, thus endangering their own health. They are afraid of being criticised and left behind on their own if they don't go on. Protecting people who are deprived A variation on this theme is that they want to offer protection to those who are having a hard time. They feel something should be done for the hungry or handicapped or deprived in this world. Work is hard and stark In the final stages they are completely exhausted. The hardships and exertions often cause cramp in their calves, stomach or other parts of the body. They become totally apathetic, don't want anything, except to be dead, at least there will be no more demands then. Failing that the least you can do for them is to leave them alone to rest and sleep. Cases

All cases mentioned below reacted very well to Cuprum aceticum.

There were many more of them but it was impossible to remember them all.

1. A 30 year old man is completely exhausted on the second day.

He is lying on the ground and is frequently shifting his position. He has cramp in his thumbs which are clenched into a fist. He is sweating profusely and you can see a salty deposit forming on the sides of his body. He is hyperventilating and he is unable to slow down his breath or breathe into his abdomen.

His blood pressure is low, his pulse hardly perceptible. He is not aware of his surroundings. He wants to drink cold water which is vomited almost immediately.

To my surprise I saw him dancing again the next day, all he had taken the night before was a dose of Cuprum aceticum and a little bit of fruit juice.

2. Cramp in thighs and buttocks.

3. Cramp in thighs and calves.

4. Intestinal cramps with dehydration.

5. A man with cramp in the thighs, medial, (>) stretching legs, (>) continuing his dancing.

6. Stomach cramps (<)(<) fasting.

7. Weakness, nausea, dizziness.

8. Numbness of the thigh muscles, on the front, doesnt know how to move his legs, they feel stiff.

9. A man with stiffness and numbness in the thigh muscles, doesnt know how to move them.

10. Weakness and dizziness, with nausea. All he wants to do is sleep, wants to die, doesnt want to dance anymore.

11. Cramp in toes at night.

12. Cramp in legs at night.

13. Cramp in soles of feet and thighs.

14. Cramp in knees, (<) medial side.

15. Cramp and numbness of the muscles.

16. Cramp in stomach, feeling of tension and constriction, = posture, = pressure.

17. Cramp in stomach, feeling of tension.

18. Cramp in back, sacral region, wants to lie down, moves and turns slowly. Completely exhausted, wants to die. Restless, groaning, wants to sleep.

19. Cramping, constricting feeling in stomach. This man has two other complaints that, unfortunately, weren't touched by the remedy: left sided sciatica with numbness and headache in neck and left temple. He has had these complaints since childhood and they keep coming back from time to time.

20. Cramp around the heart with the feeling that he is going to die.

21. Diarrhoea with intestinal cramps before stool, the day after the ritual when he started to take food and drink again.
