Picture of Manganum phosphoricum

Essence: practising the communication.

Practising the communication

They like to make contact with others, but feel they still have a lot to learn. So they don't want to overdo it, but prefer to give others the space to have their say. They also like to help others communicate. They are perfectionists and are very keen to learn extra hard.

Learning and talking

The themes of Manganum and Phosphoricum are both about learning, so this aspect is very much in the foreground. They like to teach others how to learn, they like to teach others how to communicate. Or they want to communicate how you should learn.

They often end up in professions that require a lot of talking and become therapists, social workers or teachers. Also the professions where the emphasis is even more on the aspect of speech and learning: speech therapists, language therapist, careers advisors or teaching deaf people.

Helpful towards your brothers or friends

They tend to be very helpful towards friends or brothers and sisters. If they have a friend who is ill or handicapped they will be the first to offer their support. They feel responsible for all their friends and will try to teach them everything they have learnt themselves. They wont easily ask for help for themselves, especially when they see that their friends are busy with their own problems.

A variation on this theme is the situation where they are having a hard time themselves and a friend turns round to get them through it. This friend helps them to get a new job or start a new life.

Helping by remaining silent

They appear to talk openly and with great ease. But after a while you notice that they don't show their own feelings. This is because they don't want to put pressure on other people. The put a lot of pressure on themselves, but they want to give other people plenty of space for themselves. This can create an inner conflict, because they would like to air their feelings, but they are afraid of being a burden to others. )A typical situation that might cause this dilemma is when they have a father who is very authoritarian and a mother who is very helpful.

Case by Rienk Stuut

A 30 year old woman has constant sore throats with hoarseness.

The raw pain in her throat is aggravated by dry air, and ameliorated by eating and drinking. She has much mucus in her throat which she has to hawk up before she can speak. The hoarseness is worse from talking and singing. She used to have polyps on her vocal cords. The hoarseness started when she was 2 years old after her adenoids were removed. When she was 16 she had oedema of the vocal cords. She is having speech therapy.

Her father died of lung cancer one year ago. She and her boyfriend bought her parents house, but have not moved in yet because her mother is still living there. They are waiting until her mother moves to another place as they had arranged beforehand. But her mother is feeling very depressed since the death of her husband. The patient feels very responsible for her mother. But she also gets angry with her mother who is quite an awkward sort of person and has to be handled with care. But she doesnt express her anger towards her mother and she doesnt ask her brother and sister to share the responsibility for their mother, because she doesnt want to bother them.

Her father had been an equally difficult person. She is much younger than her elder brother and sister and her parents were already quite old when she was born. She has always been afraid that they would die when she was still little. They lived on a farm, miles from anywhere and they hardly ever went out as a family. She spent a lot of time with her grandmother who was almost deaf. She had to talk very loudly to make herself heard.

She is like her father in her tenacity and her perseverance, but, unlike him, she is willing to admit her mistakes. She is like her mother in her desire to care for others. When someone has a problem her first reaction is: Let me help you.

She works in a creche and she is a typical school teacher. She always thinks she knows best. Sloppiness annoys her intensely.

There is a slight conflict at work between her and one of her colleagues who says she is too strict and doesnt give the children enough space. But she needs structure in her life. She is guarded in her way of talking, always deliberating how much to tell other people about her own feelings. Usually she says very little about herself. She feels the tension in her voice.

She looks very open and cheerful, but she hardly ever says what is really going on with her. She talks a lo,t though, and when she was little she was put on a table on her own at school because she never stopped talking.

She had a dream that homoeopathy couldn't help her because it was too new a science. She is afraid of dogs.

Generals

Weather: cold, (<) rain.

Aversion: milk, starch.

Food: (<) coffee: headache.

Analysis

The problems with her voice are quite typical of the Silver series, but also of Manganum. She is a real school teacher, which is another Manganum quality. She doesnt want to hurt her mother and that is why she doesnt tell her how she feels. Instead she wants to help her mother. She doesnt communicate (Phosphorus) because she wants to be helpful (Manganum). She also doesnt want to ask her brother and sister (Phosphorus) to help (Manganum), because they are already very busy with their own lives. Another problem area is her work, where she wants to have order and structure (Ferrum series), but she is very careful in communicating (Phosphor) her wishes. She strains her voice (Phosphorus) when teaching (Manganum) the children.

Reaction

After Manganum phosphoricum 1M she is a lot happier. Her boyfriend says she is much easier to talk to. She doesnt keep things to herself anymore and has talked to her mother about the things that bother her. There is no more tension at home. She still has some problems with her voice at school when the children are noisy and she has to speak loudly. They had a meeting with all the teachers and the problems with her colleague are being sorted out.

Case by Rienk Stuut

A woman has problems with her joints, her right thumb and her knee (Manganum) get locked, ever since her right foot had to be amputated following an accident.

She has problems with her voice (Manganum), mucus in her throat, sinusitis, headache after studying (Phosphorus) and numbness of her hands. She was brought up in a strict religious family with very high ideals (Ferrum series). She likes to take care of things, arrange things for other people. She was never allowed to reveal her own problems. She wanted to become a nurse, had a teaching job for a while (Manganum) and now works for social (Phosphorus) services (Manganum).

She wanted to do more than caring for others (Muriaticum), she also wanted to communicate(Phosphorus) with them. She worries (Manganum) about her sister (Phosphorus) who is ill.

She often wonders how she can talk (Phosphorus) with other people without being a burden (Manganum) to them. She wants to be able to hide her handicap.

Case by Rienk Stuut

A woman wants to adapt in order to be loved. Her father was very authoritarian (Ferrum series), her mother very helpful. She wants to do everything extra well: work, study etc. She had a dream: I am sitting in a well and there are a lot of people walking past, but nobody can hear me (Phosphoricum), because this well is soundproof.

She cannot tolerate cold wind (Manganum) and is afraid of thunderstorms (Phosphorus). She used to help find jobs for people who were out of work. She had wanted to become a speech (Phosphorus) therapist (Manganum). Her present job consists of advising (Manganum) students (Phosphorus) on their career (Ferrum series). She likes working with intelligent people.
