Osmium [Osm]:

- Jan Scholten

The crisis manager

Osmium has long been known as a remedy, without a clear picture however. Shah (1995) has shown us a beautiful case recently.

Signature

The name Osmium is derived from the Greek word osmos, meaning smell, because of the nasty smell of osmium tetroxide. It was discovered in 1804 and its chemical formula is Os.

This metal is very hard and difficult to mould or shape. It is the heaviest metal in the periodic system and also the most resistant to pressure. Making use of its resistance to corrosion and its hardness it is often a component in fountain pens, clock bearings and in jewellry. Compass needles also contain Osmium because it is very magnetic. It is also used as a catalyst in the production of ammonia.

Essence: persevering in exercising leadership

Persevering in leadership: steadfast

The feel they have to make a tremendous effort to exercise their power. The task is huge and the responsibility weighs heavily.

They have to put their whole weight into this venture to make it work. It is as if they want to create a kingdom out of nothing.

They know that it is no mean task they have taken on, but they also know they can do it, because they can handle an awful lot of pressure. They are relentless in pushing through their plans and they wont hesitate to sack people if they need to.

Forceful power: crisis manager

They often look for work that involves the reorganisation of a business within a very short time. They are very good at clearing up the rubble. They know how to get the dispersed energy of an organisation that has grown too fast for its own good back together again. They cut through deadlocks that have been created through too much compromise. They solve the problems that the direction doesn't know how to handle any more. They love acting as crisis manager in businesses that have come adrift.

Planning an organisation: strategic

They have a very sharp insight into the structure of an organisation. They often know long before anyone else where the potential problems are going to arise. They are very structured in their way of dealing with these problems. When there is a tough nut to crack they are there to deal with it, their long term vision knows that these actions are necessary for the future of the business.

Opposed as a king

But when they want to bring about necessary changes they are likely to run up against other people who hesitate and splutter because they can't see the use of all these new measures and who consider these plans to be a personal attack on their own integrity.

So the other people will often oppose their plans out of jealousy or out of spite. As if the task isn't difficult enough already! They have difficulty dealing with any outside circumstances that may slow them down. Their daily routine is seen more as an impediment than as a point of rest in a busy day. They would rather get on with the task in hand than be distracted by the day to day things. But although they don't like opposition, they are not to be deterred by it, they carry on regardless.

Failure through dictatorial behaviour

Their pushy sort of power may eventually be their undoing. Either the pressure becomes too much for them to bear, because they can't relax and take a break from being responsible all the time. Or they might attract too much opposition with their forceful behaviour. This can happen especially when they are dealing with older leaders who will get annoyed by their arrogant behaviour and their know all attitude.

Sisyphus

The Osmium theme is represented by the legend of Sisyphus. He condemned to push a huge boulder up a hill. He set about his task with all his power, it was an enormous struggle but eventually he managed to get the boulder in motion and to roll it slowly to the top of the hill. When he was nearly there and he already thought he had made it the treacherous rock escaped his grip and bounced down the hill again. So the poor condemned man had to start all over again. And when he had nearly reached the top once more he lost the rock again (Schwab).

Here we see the immenseness of the task and the sheer impossible strength that is needed to complete it. This is typical of Stage 8. We also see that Sisyphus is on his way to the top but cannot reach it. An interesting aspect of this story is that Sisyphus was the founder of Corinth, a typical city state (Gold series).

DD Rhenium: sits quietly on the managers chair, surveying the scene and trying to learn the business. He feels he has plenty of time to do this in. Whereas Osmium is under great pressure to establish a business within a very short period of time. He has not time for endless board meetings, there are decisions to be made and deadlocks to be broken, otherwise the organisation will never get there. Case A 40 year old woman has a whole series of complaints. The first one is a severe allergy, which makes her sneeze, with a watery, biting discharge from the nose and headaches that make her feel as her eyes are being rigidly fixed in her head. Her neck and shoulders are often stiff too. She has difficulty breathing, ameliorated from stretching her back. The complaints are (<) cold, changes of weather, in May and June, dogs (3). cats (3), birds, smoke, mimosa (3), grass, exhaust gases and house dust. Sometimes she has a hollow cough. As a child she used to get asthmatic bronchitis. A second complaint is an irritable bowel. She suffers from wind, with much distension, the flatus often smells of rotting slurry. Her abdomen is sensitive to touch, the pain is (<) touch, clothes, sitting a long time, changes of weather, walking long distances, fat and cream, and (>) stool, stretching and putting her hand on her stomach. These complaints are clearly related to stress.

A third complaint is pain in her joints and muscles, especially in neck, shoulders, lower back and right hip. The joints are swollen, especially in the wrists, worse from sitting still for a long time and eating salt.

The stress has to do with her work. She has her own organisation advice agency. The work load is varying, sometimes very busy, sometimes not. She says: I have made a business out of clearing up other peoples rubbish, which refers to the quarrels her parents used to have. She always had to act as a go between. She has a sharp insight into the patterns of an organisation. She can predict years in advance what will happen if they don't take certain preventive measures. Other people are often surprised when she is proved to be correct in her forecast. She says she is a pushy sort of woman. She doesn't give up and often takes on more than she can handle. She does her job, and she runs the house, and she studies and she is doing some alterations in the house at the moment. She also has time consuming hobbies like making her own clothes and repairing cars. She loves using her hands. She has a slight fear of heights.

She is happily married, but they didn't want any children. On her part this choice was based on her own unhappy childhood experiences.

Weather: cold (2), (<) draught (2), (<) change of weather; (>) outside, (>) mountains (2), (<) sea, (<) damp. Perspiration: sometimes on waking. Time: (<) 5 am, (<) 8-9 am. Desires: spices (3), sour (2), wine, juicy fruit. Aversion: radish (2), sweet, milk, cauliflower, sprouts. Food: (<) fat, salt, eating too much. Menses: painful (2), a sensation of drawing and stamping in her abdomen; tired, irregular; breasts painful and swollen. Sleep: unrefreshing, can't relax; short; tingling arms and legs on waking. Physical: (>) motion, (<) sitting long.

Analysis

Her job as an management advisor indicates the Gold series. She takes the lead temporarily to get the organisation on the right tracks again. She is pushy, works under pressure and doesn't give up. All these are themes of Stage 8. These two themes combined give us the remedy Osmium.

Her fear of heights also fits the Gold series.

Symptoms belonging to Stage 8: creating a job out of clearing rubble, strategic, recognises the patterns in an organisation, takes on more than she can handle.

Her stomach complaints and the stinking flatus were typical of Osmium.

Reaction

After Osmium 200K the stomach problems gradually subside. She develops a different outlook on life, doesnt want to work under pressure anymore. She would like to do something a bit more creative. Later on she got several more doses of Osmium 200K and 1M to help her through this process.

The hayfever however wasn't touched by this remedy.

Proving

Reaction of a patient after Osmium 1M.

- A strong feeling of detachment.

- Dream: I had to look after (Gold series) two children who were exactly alike, they were twins. They belonged to a friend of mine. I took them to the swimming pool but the water was dark, like a lake. One of the twins could swim, the other couldn't. I am not a good swimmer myself so we started of by doing nothing and lay down to sunbathe for a while. The boy that couldn't swim disappears in the water and I jump after in and just manage to grab him by his swimming trunks and drag him up on the side. No sooner had he been revived or he jumped in again (persevering, Stage 8). The water has become clear and now I see a ledge on where the shallow part ends and the deep end begins. He jumps and hits his head on this ledge. He is killed instantly (Gold series). I feel responsible (Gold series) and also angry because he did it on purpose. The other boy is laughing sarcastically, as if he knew all along that this was going to happen. I didn't dare tell the parents that he had done it on purpose.

- Stomach ache above the groin, right sided (Gold series), in a vertical line along the stomach. Stitching and burning pains, as if the stomach lining is inflamed, as if the whole inside, including the ovaries (Gold series), spleen and liver are affected and inflamed. I am thinking of cancer (Gold series) of the ovaries.- Little spots or lumps.
