AGRIMONY :Bach Remedies

- Dr. D.V. Krishnamoorty.

Do not express his sufferings - Suppressed emotions, unable to weep, avoids quarrels and arguments, seeks peace of mind - Sadness, but cannot weep (such as death of beloved ones) (in homoeopathy, Gels., Nat-m. etc.) - taciturnity -Aversion to talk, sensitive to arguments, quarrels - Wants peace of mind.

Is not expressing his feelings Suppressed emotions desire to sacrifice things for the sake of peace of minds are the key- notes for the use of Agrimony. A business executive had an only daughter. Hers was a mental case and the best treatment available in the city failed to improve her condition, and she was declared as incurable case. To forget his anxiety about his daughters condition, he resorted to liquor and cigars. Agrimony helped him to bear his anxiety and make a sensible approach to his problems. From this we find that the agrimony type tries to escape from his mental worries. (Chestnut bud type of people try to escape from his responsibilities or avoid his duties and he find some means of avoiding them, such as by giving lame excuses.) Along with Cherry Plum, Walnut, Scleranthus etc. for patients addicted to narcotics etc., Agrimony may also be kept in mind when the person takes to liquor etc. to forget or escape from his family worries etc. To forget his girl-friend who married another boy he started consuming alcohol instead of approaching the problem with a calm and sensible mind. When we write that to cure any bodily ailments, the flower remedies are prescribed on mental symptoms alone, You need not feel that he should learn psychology or practice psycho-analysis. No such knowledge of psychology is necessary or deep study of the patient or probing into his mental faculties is required to be done. It is sufficient if we simply listen to the very words coming from the mouth of the person which leads us directly to the remedy. The Agrimony type of person, of course, never refers to or even tells others about his sufferings. But, sometimes they come spontaneously from his mouth:

To whom can I go and express my agonies!

Who knows how much I am sufferings in my mind?

Simply because I have agonies can I go and disturb others by describing all my problems?

Let us take a look at some people of the Agrimony type. He travels in a bus and gives a one-rupee note to the conductor for a twenty-paise ticket. The conductor shouts at him telling him that he has no change. Our Agrimony type of patient is not put out but smiles, saying that it does not matter if the conductor does not give him the balance of eighty paise! Here, we should carefully note that the balance of eighty paise has value for this patient (Since he comes from a poor family.) But when it comes to the point of arguing with the conductor to get that amount, he is prepared to loss it, rather than enter into an argument or inquiring others if they have change for one rupee. The Agrimony type is not prepared to quarrel or argue because he is already mentally tortured and has no inclination to increase the suffering. This type of suffering in mind may prevent his sleep. On the surface, it is difficult to find the remedy such people need but the very words from their mouth will indicate the remedy. I wont go about telling others my sufferings, Straightway shows Agrimony!

During illness they do not go to a doctor or disturb others in the house but as far as possible bear it silently which means hiding their suffering. This is contrary to the chicory and heather types. The Chicory patient type of person desires company and attention and, therefore, even for trivial ailments he tends to exaggerate his sufferings to get the attention from others. The Heather type takes delight in narrating to others details as his sufferings.

To forget my problems and family worries I have taken to cigarettes and drinks is the attitude of Agrimony. For this Cherry Plum will not help.

He will not weep even if his child is dead (Nat-mur., Ign.) In fact, the emotion is suppressed and to hide it he pretends to laugh at his trouble. Laughing away ones troubles is good, no doubt, but the Agrimony patient suffers internally in mind and hides it by smiling outwardly. Because the Agrimony type of people suppress their feeling they become restless in mind. When you see a person of this type who is restless in his mind, and ask him what the trouble is he will say Oh, nothing. The Impatiens and vervain types are also restless but only in body and this is due to hurry and over-enthusiasm respectively.

Another interesting characteristic of the Agrimony type of person is that he never bargains. He may be sure to get some discount or concession or reduction in the price by bargaining but bargaining involves some sort of argument and the Agrimony type of persons are not prepared for this.

He will not go and demand his dues from others. Asking for payment of ones dues will involve some argument and perhaps will give rise to a quarrel. To avoid this, he is prepared to lose anything, be it money or material, No arguments please. To forget my worries, let me go out and meet somebody. It is not for discussing his sufferings but it is to escape from his mental sufferings he desires company in which he can be jovial and smiling.

Unlike the Agrimony and Chicory types, the Water Violet and Impatiens type of person wants solitude; In the case of Water Violet, it is because he feels others cannot understand the value of the work being done by him; in Impatiens, it is because he feels others will hinder his speed of action.

Suppose an Agrimony type of persons child is seriously ill and can be saved only if it is hospitalized immediately. That may need the help of a neighbour or friend. But, remember, that he does not want to trouble others with his sufferings. He never discloses his sufferings.

Sometimes, however, this sufferings will be revealed from his mouth in the form of the following expressions, which come out spontaneously on occasions.

Who knows how much I am sufferings? If you ask him, Tell me your troubles he will reply, I am not the type of person who goes about disturbing others by telling them his sufferings. Other expressions are:

I have no peace of mind

Is money more important than mental peace? I am, of course, rich, but mental peace is a thing of the past for me.

He intensely years for mental peace.

If you bargain, the Agrimony type shop-keeper will ask you either to pay the price demanded or else go away. If you insist on bargaining he will refuse to sell.

He is not interested in long-drawn quarrels, negotiations, arguments or correspondence.

A dispute arose regarding some hereditary property between an Agrimony type of person and his relatives. He could win his case easily by going to court. But he would rather lose than enter into litigation and go to court to get his share.

He has no place in his mind for arguments as it is already full of sufferings caused by suppressed emotions.

I never like quarrels or arguments.

Sensitive to quarrels and arguments would be a suitable term to describe this remedy.

Sometimes it is the other member in the family through whose mouth we learn that the sufferer is of Agrimony type. Others may tell you: You see he is not the type who consults a doctor whenever he is not well,

He is poor as a Receptionist or in a job that involves public relations, which means talking with persons.
