HYDROPHIS CYANOCINCTUS, Cases

- THOMPSON M,
Case MT 2680
Case PB 2938
A female patient (Case 2938), born in 1969, first seen in August 1996. Problems began in May 1995 with aches and pains and feeling tired and then pains in the lower back, pins and needles and tingling which spread to the legs and to arms and hands. Also headaches too, in June legs and feet were swollen for two days. Recently the upper abdomen is swollen. Is very tired and fed up with it all feels as though it has drained her. Is always moving around doing different things.
At age 13 went to live with her father who is from Northampton; she has moved many times perhaps something she would like to change. After university in 1992 got a job in West Sussex; it was a very stressful job and took on a lot of responsibility. Has been thinking of training as a solicitor as she did a business studies degree.
Christmas 1995 got depressed; she had a job she was not happy with.
Has hay fever and has had sinusitis, also bad varicose veins which comes from the paternal side of the family.
When run down gets flu; fever, aches and pains, better after sleeping for 24 hours. For a time it was difficult to walk. Polymyalgia rheumatica was suspected, had the test for it but it was negative. Was given steroids which did not help either. Pins and needles come and go in waves throughout the body; has had pains in her feet and shooting pains in her body.
Very angry teenager, parents split up, especially angry with her father. Mother was ill and tried to take charge of her brothers and sisters, patient left to go and live with her father. Confident, mature, responsible as a child. At age 13 wanted to be successful, not to get married and have kids. Can never really see herself settling down. Always has a reason to move, is always moving on. Had a relationship with her best friend's brother in April 1993 for a year. Was angry at herself for getting involved with him. Is afraid to say to someone that she needs them. Feels she might be emotionally detached
Fears: heights (2) snakes (1)
Is stubborn, does not like to give up battles until forced to give in. Upset by animals on TV. Loves tigers and big cats. Scuba dives and is fascinated by fish etc.
Food: vegetarian, loves cheese and mushrooms. Finds prawns to rich. Cannot bear porridge, rice pudding and hot milk products.
Feels she has been run down physically for some years and that this is a culmination. Wants to do employment and social law issues. Did have a bad reaction to an insect bite, soon after this started, leg was very swollen.
8/96 Rx Hydrophis cyanocinctus 12c/2xD
2 weeks later Results of MRI scan were OK. She was told she was clinically depressed which she was surprised and angry about. Feels her muscles are developing and not wasting. Is very worried about letting people down. Is worried about making up her mind, agonises over decisions. Feels she has to make changes but is worried about doing them on her own. Has felt more positive but no change in physical symptoms but is sleeping better. Rx Hydrophis cyanocinctus 30c/2xD
10/96 All pains pins and needles have completely gone. Wants to go back to her diving club. Rx Hydrophis cyanocinctus 200c/3xW
12/96 Very well life is starting to slot into place is clear about making choices and saying no. Rx Hydrophis cyanocinctus 200c/1xW
8/97 Phoned patient; she is well and symptom free.
The MacRepertory chart shows the rubrics used to analyse the case with a comparison of snake remedies only. Looking back over this case a year later there are rubrics I might have added and subtracted but this was not how I arrived at the successful remedy. I was familiar with the proving by Raeside of Hydrophis cyanocinctus who made the following comment:
From a toxicological point of view, an attack on the peripheral nerves can be seen, giving a symptomatological table analogous to that of poliomyelitis.
I also noticed her desire to swim and dive! I had previously used the remedy in a patient with some success who had a serious fear of snakes, presented with a neck problem, had pains and other sensations throughout the body, and had polio at age 14 months.
