Natrum nitricum [Nat-n]:

- Jan Scholten

Natrum nitricum is described in a very minor way by Allen (1982, vol 6, page 281), Clarke (1985, part 2, page 598), and Boericke (1927, page 463).

Its clinical application has been in the treatment of nosebleeds, although this symptom is not mentioned in the provings. Its general picture is not at all clear.

Group analysis

The group analysis gives us the theme of not being allowed or not being able to enjoy life. They have the feeling that enjoyment isn't for them. The happy and enjoyable side of life is not there for them to appreciate. Or they might feel that they are not allowed to enjoy things, because all the good and rich food will make them fat. Their attitude is very puritan, the way one sometimes observes in people with calvinistic backgrounds: 'enjoyment is sinful'.

A variation on this theme is found in people who can only enjoy things when they are alone. They feel it is not right to enjoy life, but when they are on their own they will sometimes slip in a little glass of port or something like that. But they will do this when they are by themselves, rather than go to a party.

Case

A man of 35 comes because of sneezing attacks. Once every 4 or 5 weeks he spends whole day sneezing. It always happens on a day off work. He can usually postpone it for a while by 'willing it to stay away', but eventually it comes anyway. He sneezes all day, walks bent double, sweats a lot, has a watery, acrid discharge and his eyes become very red. Lying down and sniffing salt water ameliorates; daytime, getting up, washing and dust aggravate.

Past history: pain under left knee, stitching, ever since straining it while playing volleyball.

General characteristics:

Temperature: warm, needing fresh air.

Perspiration: easy, on the back, (<) exertion and getting nervous.

Desires: vegetables, milk, yoghurt, salt, coffee, alcohol.

Aversion: meat (because of the factory farming), sweet, asparagus (3).

Sleep: good and refreshing; sleeps on right side.

Mind: He is a quiet and sociable type of person. He doesn't like discotheques. He is introverted. He is sensitive and definitely not ambitious. Last year he had a temporary promotion at work, but this gave him sleepless nights. He was upset by not being able to handle things properly. He has a 'weekend relationship' with his girlfriend. They had lived together for 5 years but this didn't work well any longer. Both have a busy job and they expected too much from each other. He is very disappointed and his complaints started at the beginning of this relationship.

He has a good sense of humour and he dislikes unreasonable demands made by students.

He was never allowed to make any noise as a child.

Work: he is a systems analyst. He likes his work, because he likes solving problems with his mathematical knowledge. He likes helping people and he likes travelling.

Analysis

His complaints are obviously linked to his relationship. This makes us think of the Sulphuricums, but also of the Nitricums. The Nitricums especially have the aspect of having a good time together. And this is the aspect that has been disturbed in this case: there is not enough time for each other, they can't do nice things together anymore. The possibility for this has been lost, which reminds us of Natrum. His introverted character fits with this too. A few more symptoms for Nitricum are: warm, need for social life. For Natrum we find: warm, (<) meat. The general complaints are however difficult to find in any description of Nat-n.

Reaction

An initial prescription of Mag-m brought no change. But after Nat-n 1M he felt 80 Percent better within one month, mentally as well as physically.

Picture of Natrum nitricum

Essence: enjoyment is forbidden.

Mind: they have been brought up with the idea that enjoyment is really not possible or not allowed. This often happens in a puritan or calvinistic background. They regard having fun as sinful.

It may also be that they consider enjoyment to be bad because it makes them fat.

They also feel that others shouldn't go too far in their demands for enjoyment. Their attitude towards their children is similar: 'you shouldn't spoil your children'. They are the type of people who can easily leave their babies and children to cry once they have taken care of their necessary elemental needs.

Although they have the feeling that enjoyment is not allowed, they do still crave for it. So they are inclined to indulge in a quiet glass of port, all by themselves. They feel less comfortable doing this in the presence of others, because they are inclined to put others first and themselves last: they don't really need or deserve something nice. They have the same attitude in their sexual relationships, denying themselves the pleasures. The result is a feeling that they don't get enough pleasure and enjoyment in life.

Fear: narrow spaces.

General characteristics:

Location: left sided.

Temperature: warm. (<) sun; hot flushes (3).

Time: (<) 9 am.

Desires: fat, cheese, bacon.

Aversion: fat, cheese, bacon.

Hayfever. Colds with watery discharge.

Scabs inside the nose, stitching pains on detaching.

Heart and vascular diseases.

Sun allergy (2).
