NAJA MIND :

- Dr. Farokh Master.

Sinister and evil by reputation and superstition, feared, reviled and thought of as vermin-these are common attitudes people hold towards snakes.

However, herpetologists who work with Asiatic cobras known that the species is very reluctant to bite, and even when it does, it fails to inject venom in more than half of the bites. At the first provocation, the snake rears the front third of its body and spreads it's hood, facing the intruder.. Should the disturbance continue, the cobra might make several quick strikes. Sometimes these too are bluffs and the strike is made with the mouth closed. If these actions do not succeed in repelling the attacker, the snake may turn around and display the back of the hood and markings to the source of the threat. The hood is designed to give the impression that the snake's head is bigger than it really is and that the snake should be left alone. If al else fails it will make every attempt to escape or may feign death.

This above fact can be clearly compared with the Naja mind. The temperament is completely different from Lachesis. Not the intensity, hatefulness, and aggressiveness of Lachesis, instead, there is more of a personality which is "soft."

It can be understood that these people have a lot of tolerance and do not easily retaliate. There is a lot of grief inside, which becomes the most important causative factor, they may want to retaliate after a lot of harassment but they are so duty bound that on one side they want to get back with the person (i.e. take revenge ) but on the other side want to perform their work dutifully.

This can be understood by the following rubrics:

-CONFUSION IDENTITY AS TO HIS, DUALITY SENSE OF (Synthesis -pg-

34)

- THOUGHTS, two trains of thought (Zandvoort -pg-347)

- WILL, contradiction of (Synthesis-pg-209)

- ANTAGONISM, with herself (Zandvoort-pg-21)

These patients have a lot of anxiety for family members. They are constantly worried about others . They silently do their duty but after a lot of grief, become very depressed. They then start brooding over imaginary troubles and develops a lot of delusions like-

- Delusion, being injured by surroundings (Synthesis-pg- 63)

-Delusion, suffered wrong (Synthesis-pg-82)

-Delusion, neglected duty he has (Synthesis-pg-87)

-Delusion, wrong, everything is (Zandvoort-pg-124)

-Anxiety, others for (Synthesis-pg-18)

Because of this depression, they develop a very low self esteem. Naja has a tremendous lack of self-confidence, always feeling that his endeavours will fail even though this may be unfounded. This can be interpreted by the following rubrics:

-CONFIDENCE, WANT OF SELF (Synthesis-pg-32)

-Delusion, succeed that he cannot, does everything wrong (Zandvoort-Pg-119)

-Self deprecation (Zandvoort -Pg-313)

-Sadness, wrong way, as if having done everything in (Synthesis- pg-173)

-Fear, failure of (Synthesis-pg-103)

-Irresolution (Synthesis-pg-130)

Naja individuals always like to be occupied. They like to keep working so that they may forget their troubles, for example:

-Occupation, desire to (Synthesis-pg-155)

-Work, desire for mental (Synthesis-pg. 210)

The venom of this snake is supposed to be more potent and less viscous in the monsoon. Therefore more cases of snake-bite are reported in this season and therefore people tend to be more scared during these months. This can be correlated to the rubric FEAR OF RAIN which is seen in this drug.

Naja patients do have some association with snakes, for example DREAMS OF SNAKES. They can wear snake design rings and glasses with low nose bridge. They part their hair which gives a cobra- like (" V" shaped) appearance.

Naja patients have several features like (any other snake):

1) Attractiveness.

2) Communicative.

3) Malice.

4) Competitiveness.

In Naja these qualities are subdued by certain nobility, certain morality and they are not as loud, loquacious, egoistic sarcastic. In this way it seems to fit into the very nature of India where people are subdued, suppressed and wronged but yet are known to be spiritual, responsible and duty conscious. In India people worship and give lot of respect to Cobra.

Naja patients are also known to be very secretive.
