Infants foods
- Benson A.R
There is no infant's food except modified cow's milk which can be used continually with any degree of success. Nearly all proprietary foods are simply cereals and owe most of their efficacy to the milk which is mixed with them in preparing. They have the great disadvantage of containing an excessive amount of sugar. This produces fat so that the baby gains rapidly in weight, but this is too often at the expense of bone and muscle. The same is true of condensed milk. Any one of these preparations may be useful during an illness or for a short time, but they should never be used for a long time.
Many cases of scurvy and rickets are due to the prolonged use of condensed milk and proprietary foods, and infants which have been fed on these preparations lack to a marked degree the resistive power necessary to overcome disease.
